Motion-Less Adaptive Optical Systems Based on Liquid Crystals: From Fundamentals to Mobile Applications

Abstract

Continued miniaturization of optical cameras requires important changes of its components as well as their integration and operation principles. Among the impacts of this miniaturization are the tightening of manufacturing and operation tolerances and the complexity of integration of mechanically moving elements for auto focus, image stabilization and optical zoom. We shall describe the use of liquid crystals to build optical components enabling some of the above mentioned functions without mechanical movement or deformation. Fundamental mechanisms of liquid crystal control and the corresponding challenges of optical design will be presented.
