Static Optical Interferometry: Evolution, Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Static optical interferometry has continued to evolve over recent decades into increasingly compact and portable forms, for example, from Twyman-Green and Lloyd’s mirrors type configurations to Young’s Interferometer and multi-core fiber forms. This evolution has seen developments from multi-component, bulk-optic configurations to single optical fiber and optical waveguide circuits and extreme miniaturisation in the form of multi-mode and multi-core fibers. Here, we consider advantages, challenges and opportunities that this evolution presents across a selection of metrology and spectroscopy applications.
