Abstract

Phosphate glass compositions (P2O5- Al2O3 -Li2O-B2O3-BaO - PbO - La2O3) were developed in order to fabricate a passive double-cladding optical fibre for high-power amplifier and lasers applications. The different types, concentrations and ratio of the constituents of the phosphate glasses have been investigated and discussed. In particular, the phosphate glasses have been designed to provide suitable characteristic temperatures and viscosity behavior for the fabrication of fibre preform by the rotational casting technique. The use of this technique which is traditionally employed for the fabrication of tellurite, fluoride or chalcogenide glass preforms is reported for the first time using phosphate glasses.

The thermo-mechanical properties and optical properties of the glasses are presented and discussed with respect to the glass composition. A particular attention was given to the design of an adequate numerical aperture (NA>0.4) between first and second cladding while maintaining similar thermo-mechanical properties in view of the fiber drawing process. The preform used for the fibre drawing was produced by rod-in-tube technique at a rotation speed of 3000 rpm. Thanks to the inner surface quality of the tubes manufactured by the rotational casting, the fibre presents high quality interface between the core and the internal cladding and between the internal and the external cladding. Loss attenuation was measured using the cut-back method. Characterizations of this passive optical fibre indicate that our phosphate glasses are very promising as host materials for the development of high-power fibre lasers [1,2].
