Abstract
Adiabatic compression or expansion of gas produces heating or cooling, but it is not generally appreciated that solids display the same property although to a much less noticeable extent. Any pressure in gas, however, is automatically equalised throughout, whereas pressures arising in a solid show up as localised higher stressed regions where heat is generated or absorbed. Thermoelastcic Stress Analysis (TSA) is a technique which uses the transfer of Infrared radiation to measure the resulting local temperature changes remotely, and in so doing provides information on the associated stresses.
