Abstract

CO2 laser matter interactions at intensities of 1012–1016 W/cm2 produce hot electrons through the resonance absorption mechanism. Simulations1 show that this source of hot electrons can be characterized by a Maxwellian energy distribution with a source temperature Ts which scales with the laser intensity as I1/3. Other mechanisms, such as Raman or 2ωp instabilities, may also be involved in the hot electron generation.
