Abstract

Two laser techniques for monitoring aerosol droplet mass concentration are described. Both techniques utilize Mie calculations of optical extinction by droplets of liquids for which optical constants are known, which are shown to be experimentally verifiable. One technique utilizes a He-Ne laser1 in the geometric scattering regime,2 where very simple functional relationships are shown to exist between droplet extinction and diameter.
