Abstract

We describe a single-step photoionization scheme, based on the use of autoionizing resonances, which is used in the analysis of ytterbium nitrate samples. The cross section for the 6s2 1S0→5d6p 3D transition is 10−16 cm2, allowing optical saturation (~100 % ionization) over a rather large focal volume of ≳ 10−2 cm3 as well as providing elemental selectivity in the ionization process.
