We have previously described the generation of optical pulses as short as 90 fsec by passive mode-locking in the colliding pulse ring configuration.1 In this paper we describe a method of amplifying these pulses to gigawatt power levels while retaining or reducing the short temporal duration of the original pulse. Such intense short optical pulses provide access to a wide variety of nonlinear optical phenomena with a degree of time resolution not previously available.
