Abstract

Recently, it became possible to make high bit-rate long-length optical communication systems, using the OTDR technique.1 In general, the backscattered power level in a single-mode fiber is less than that in a multimode fiber by 10-15 dB for the same light-source power. From this point of view, a high-power optical source and efficient capturing technique for the backscattered signal are desirable to find imperfections in long-length single-mode fibers.2
