Abstract
NDP5o14 (NPP) is a solid-state laser material1 which has attracted interest because of the low- fluorescence quenching of Nd ions at its high stoichiometric concentration, 3.96 × 1021/cm3. Previous efforts with flashlamp pumping of these laser materials have been limited to low-energy operation which resulted in output energies of a few tens of millijoules in free oscillation conditions.2 In this paper, we report results of recent experiments with NPP lasers which gave up to 0.68 J of output energy at 1.05-μm wavelength in a 500-μsec long (FWHM) pulse with 0.85 % overall efficiency and 1.1% slope efficiency.
