Abstract

A new design has been developed for an optical intensity-to-phase modulator suitable for ail-coherent and incoherent-to-coherent optical modulation. For applications such as real-time optical control and real-time erasable holography, high-speed resolution and optical quality are required. High sensitivity and diffraction efficiency also are desirable. For high speed the device must work by the Pockels, Kerr, or Faraday effect. The Pockels effect was selected because large phase shifts are easily generated. The modulator then required an input detector for photon-to-charge conversion. The design considers the properties of the Pockels cell crystal, the detector, and the electrical-optical interfaces and coatings.
