Abstract

The requirement to generate short wavelengths on large-aperture inertial confinement fusion laser systems, coupled with the limited size of suitable harmonic generation crystals, has prompted development of KDP crystal arrays. Previous reports summarized the development and performance of 15-cm aperture prototype arrays.1 The results of prototype tests established the feasibility of the array concept. The crystal arrays are precision optical assemblies of a matrix of KDP crystal segments placed edge to edge and mounted between two windows in an index fluid-filled housing. The array must as nearly as possible simulate the performance of an equivalent full-aperture single crystal.
