Abstract

Many applications of semiconductor lasers call for the controlled steering of the radiation pattern emitted by them. Here we present a general analysis of the problem of incorporating the steering mechanism within the semiconductor laser itself via the modification of its index of refraction.1-3 Such a monolithic configuration has the potential advantages of higher reliability and considerable savings in size and weight of the system.
