Abstract
Many applications such as laser annealing, optical bistability, or new laser action necessitate understanding of the interactions starting with the absorption of light. We report here experiments in two copper halogenide compounds (CuCl, Cul) where most of the perturbation introduced by a photoexcitation of 100-fsec duration disappears in a time of the order of 20 psec or less. This may have some applications to bistable devices where usually the on-off time is slow due to the long carrier lifetime or to new laser emission in the plasma spectral range.
