Abstract

We have obtained cw laser radiation on the 4880-Å line of Ar+(4p2D5/2→4S2P3/2 by exciting Ar vapor with a do electron beam. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of cw lasing in a noble gas ion system using a dc electron beam for excitation. The conventional cw noble gas-ion lasers are based on electron collisional excitation in the positive column region of a discharge, where very high-current densities (hundreds of A/cm2) are generally required. Electron-beam-pumped ion lasers have the possibility of increased power and efficiency as well as the generation of cw radiation in the VUV region because of the high density of energetic electrons.
