Abstract
Laser Doppler velocimetry has become a very useful laboratory tool for the measurement of gas, liquid, and solid surface velocities. This paper presents the design of a laser Doppler velocimeter for solid surface measurements which is no longer just a laboratory tool but can be used in harsh industrial environments for process control applications. The instrument is very tolerant of changing surface reflectivities (dynamic range of 103), and it has a large depth of focus making it suitable for many on-line applications.
