Abstract

Although rare gas halide lasers have sufficient bandwidth for the generation of pulses in the picosecond range, direct methods for the production of pulses significantly shorter than a nanosecond have met with only limited success. This has, therefore, led to the use of rare gas halide lasers as amplifiers of ultrashort pulses originating from sophisticated auxiliary sources which can be tuned to the appropriate laser wavelength.1
