Abstract
The beam quality obtainable from a laser has direct implications on the design of a laser system. To achieve the minimum power and hence minimum laser volume for a given task the laser beam quality must be near diffraction-limited. The laser-induced medium perturbation (LIMP) effect1 is important in CO2 lasers and can severely affect the laser beam quality.
