Abstract

A variety of novel sensors which utilize the interference between the orthogonally polarized modes of a birefringent single-mode fiber have been recently demonstrated. In such configurations physical perturbations change the birefringence of a length L of fiber, which, assuming both modes are excited, leads to a change in the state of polarization (SOP) of the light transmitted at the fiber output, which can be detected as the signal using a polarization analyzer.
