Abstract
We have determined the instantaneous pumping efficiency of Nd:glass by Xe flashlamps from spectral data over a wide range of input energies and flashlamp bore diameters. Assuming all emitted photons pass through the glass once, the instantaneous pumping efficiency (Plaser/Plamp) is as large as 16% for conditions of interest. Our spectral data are sufficiently detailed to be useful in predicting the pumping efficiency of other solid-state laser media by Xe flashlamps.
