Abstract

We are pursuing a new approach to large aperture electrooptical switching which utilizes transparent plasma electrodes.1 A thin electrooptical material is exposed to a glow discharge plasma on each face. The plasma acts as a transparent conductive coating allowing uniform charging of each surface to the required potential. Thus high-aspect-ratio electrooptic cells can be constructed for high-powerlaser applications such as inertial confinement fusion.
