Applications of tunable femtosecond pulse compression

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The unique properties of single-mode optical fibers make them ideal nonlinear elements in a pulse compression system. For example, using an optical fiber pulse compressor, the 6-psec pulses from a commercial mode-locked dye laser have been shortened to 90 fsec. Furthermore, numerical calculations indicate that pulse compression factors of several hundred should be possible. A summary of the applications of the optical fiber pulse compressor by several different laboratories will be given.
