Brillouin Pulse Compression of KrF Laser Radiation in SF6 Gas

Abstract

Stimulated backward light scattering (Raman (SRS) and Brillouin (SBS)) has been recognized as an efficient method for compressing optical pulses as well as amplifying pulses of good spatial quality using pump beams of poor spatial quality. The interest in backward amplifiers has heightened recently because of their application in high power excimer laser systems. For large aperture, high power, pulse compressor systems a low pressure gas scatterer is preferable. Detailed theoretical and experimental studies of such backward Raman amplifiers have been reported [1].
