Abstract
A flashlamp-pumped Cr-sensitized Nd:GdScGagarnet (Nd/Cr:GSGG) laser has been operated at 1.06μm in both the long-pulse and Q-switched modes. An energy efficiency (laser output to flashlamp input) of more than 4.5% has been achieved. This represents an improvement by a factor of ~2 over Nd:YAG used in the same laser. A number of pump cavity and flashlamp combinations have been used in evaluating and optimizing laser performance.
