Abstract
Vibronic lasers based on Co:MgF2 and Ni:MgF2 crystals have proven to be versatile broadly tunable cw pulsed sources of IR radiation.1,2 We report here the first tunable cw mode-locked operation of these lasers. The Co:MgF2 and Ni:MgF2 materials have large gain bandwidths of 2000 and 400 cm−1, respectively. The more widely tunable Co:MgF2 system is especially interesting, with demonstrated cw tunability from 1.55 to 2.15µm. These systems have small gain cross sections (~10−21 cm2) and, therefore, require use of intracavity modulation to produce practical mode locking.
