Femtosecond pulse generation in a linear cavity terminated by an antiresonant ring

Abstract

We have designed and demonstrated a mode-locked dye laser that combines the advantages of a femtosecond ring laser (stable operation with very short pulses)1 with those of a linear laser. The cavity consists of a standard Spectra-Physics model 375 dye laser in which the output mirror has been replaced by an antiresonant ring.2 A similar arrangement has been used previously for mode-locking of solid-state lasers.3 As in the ring laser, two counterpropagating pulses meet in the absorber jet located at the center of the antiresonant ring.
