Abstract
The performance boundaries of Nd solid-state lasers are determined by the spectroscopic and thermooptic properties of the host. The spectroscopic parameters, stimulated emission cross section, and fluorescence lifetime establish the energy storage and extraction capabilities, while the thermooptic properties, thermal lensing, and thermal-induced birefringence determine performance at high average power. We compare the spectroscopic and thermooptic properties of Nd:YLF, Nd: YAG, and Nd:glass. At moderate energies and average powers, Nd:YLF has decided performance advantages.
