Abstract

Several problems exist within jet engine combustore, including coking, nozzle fouling, and liner cracking, that can limit their durability for long-term use. In addition, the design of the combustor for best performance is not always understood fully. To help study and alleviate these problems, a viewing system was developed utilizing fiber optics that permits views to be taken inside the combustor during full-scale engine operation. Besides observation, diagnostic information can be recorded and monitored, such as flame location, dynamics, and temperature.
