Abstract
A laser beam may be swept across a surface to cut a groove by vaporization. Groove cross sections and material removal rates Z are reported for hot-pressed silicon nitride cut with a cw carbon dioxide laser as a function of beam power and polarization, cutting speed, ambient atmosphere, and focusing conditions.
