Abstract
There are two kinds of ion site for the chromium in alexandrite. The Cr3+ ions at the mirror sites are electric dipole allowed and contribute to the laser action. The inversion sites constitute ~25 % of the chromium density in the crystal and are relatively long-lived (40 msec). Excitation spectra indicate that the 4T2 absorption peak of the inversion sites is ~500 nm, where the mirror site absorption is at its minimum.
