Deformable surface spatial light modulator

Abstract

A novel spatial light modulator based on a deformable gel surface is presented. It has remarkable optical properties, and its construction and operation are comparatively simple (Fig. 1). In the passive state, the gel surface shows a gratinglike relief due to the spatially modulated electric field between the comb-shaped and uniform transparent electrodes. In the active state, this relief grating gradually disappears where the write light illuminates the photoconductor and thus reduces the spatial modulation of the electric field.
