Abstract
This paper presents detailed experimental and theoretical work which demonstrates that nonlinear gain is an important determinant of both the mode spectra and dynamic response of 1.3-μm InGaAsP lasers. The magnitude of the nonlinear gain coefficients is found from steady state measurements of the longitudinal mode spectrum1 and is shown to predict correctly the observed highly asymmetric mode spectra and damped relaxation oscillations.
