Abstract

Nd:LiNbO3 is an interesting laser ion host combination due to its nonlinear optical, electrooptical, and laser properties. Consequently, it has been the subject of a number of studies since its disoovery.1 However, this material has been severely limited by its photorefractive response, but the recent discovery of MgO:LiNbO3 with its reduced photorefractive effect avoids this limitation.2 A number of interesting yet simple devices could be designed with the Nd-doped material including efficient green sources by self-frequency doubling,3 self-modulated lasers, self-Q-switched lasers, and waveguide lasers.
