Abstract

This paper reports the generation of a 4-psec pulse by an actively mode-locked Q-switched (AMQ) glass laser, which is the shortest pulse by AMQ lasers. Temporal profiles of pulses were observed to change drastically after the peak of a Q-switched pulse train, and the shortest pulse was generated at the skirt of the latter half of a pulse train. The observed pulse shortening during a pulse train was found to be caused by self-phase modulation in the laser cavity, which was confirmed by the agreement between numerical model calculations and experimental results.
