Abstract
The single-longitudinal-mode characteristic of cleaved-coupled-cavity (C3) semiconductor lasers has permitted record capacity fiber-optic link demonstrations during the past two years.1 However, it is probable that the best applications for these devices will be those where their electronic tunability can be utilized. In any event, the stability of the essential single-mode feature is a key concern.
