Abstract

Narrow-linewidth lasers are of interest for application in lightwave systems employing coherent detection. Spectral characteristics of semiconductor lasers are known to be influenced by optical feedback from an external reflecting surface. This feedback effect can be used constructively to achieve single-frequency narrow-spectral-linewidth laser output. Graded-index-rod external-coupled-cavity (GREGG) lasers1 have exhibited linewidths as narrow as a few megahertz,2 and this linewidth cart be further reduced to ~100 kHz by the addition of a weak optical feedback. We report here (1) the linewidth behavior of the GRECC laser and (2) an experimental heterodyne envelope-detection system using a GRECC laser with external amplitude modulation.
