Ultrafast nonlinear optical responses of Kerr liquids deduced from frequency-domain measurements

Abstract

With the advance of femtosecond laser technology, there is an increasing number of subpicosecond-scale nonlinear optical measurements on a variety of materials. Naturally, a great deal of attention is paid to the samples with potential device applications as an efficient femtosecond optical shutter or optical limiter.1 Among these samples are common Kerr liquid samples such as nitrobenzene or man-tailored semiconducting materials.2 The inevitable by-product of this sort of ultrafast pulse measurement is to gain some insight into the dynamic processes of the nonlinear optical phenomena.
