Abstract
The growth of holography in its 38-year lifetime has been considerable although sporadic. Twice in its history holography has surged and then retreated. Today, as a result of a variety of successful applications, holography is in the ascendancy. There now appears to be a solid sustained growth that should continue. Holography displays and holographic optical elements are the principal areas of growth with several additional application areas likely to come to fruition soon. (invited paper, 25 min)
