Abstract
Optical fiber sensors have several superior properties for their use in industry, e.g., immunity to adverse environment, nonmetallic, insensitivity to electromagnetic noise and noncontact. A feasibility study of optical fiber sensors provided a significantly new approach to measuring the physical, chemical, and biological quantities from a remote site with excellent signal to noise ratio. Research in the last couple of years has resulted in promising methods for industry; a few examples are gas sensors based on absorption spectral analysis, optical fiber gyroscopes, temperature sensors making use of backscattered light, and pH sensors for medical electrics.
