Abstract
The development of fiber optic sensors or optrodes, in the past several years has led to a great advance in the area of remote detection and analysis. This paper discusses the development of some high temperature optrodes designed to be used in very hostile environments such as those encountered in a geothermal well. The optrode sensor material is made of an extremely insoluble host material, such as synroc (e.g., CaZrTi2O7) or β-alumina, into which rare earth ions or uranyl ions have been doped. Dopants are chosen which provide a luminescent signal that changes as a function of the physical parameter or chemical species of interest.
