Abstract
An ideal experimental test of laser-heated temperature distribution calculations would yield highresolution temperature measurements in both space and time. The low signals furnished by small areas in short times prevent optical pyrometry from being useful as an experimental verification. As an alternate approach, irradiation of an optically and thermally thin film deposited on the substrate of interest which undergoes a first-order phase change in a temperature range of interest can provide a cross section of the temperature profile at the critical temperature. By varying the Irradiation conditions and thin-film material, it is possible to obtain sufficient data to provide a good experimental test of theoretical calculations.
