Digital and quasi-linear electrooptic modulators synthesized from directional couplers

Abstract

Conventional electrooptic modulators, such as the Mach-Zehnder interferometric modulator, the simple directional coupler switch, and the alternating Δβ switch, are ideal for neither the analog nor digital transmission system. In an analog system, high linearity over a large range is needed. None of the electrooptic modulators can satisfy that criterion. In a digital system, it is very desirable to have a tolerable range of voltages which can provide the on state or the off state. Yet conventional modulators require highly accurate voltage to achieve either state.
