Abstract

We report on flashlamp-pumped broadband laser action of Cr3+ in two low field garnets, Cr3+:Gd3Sc2Al3O12 and Cr3+:Gd3SC1.6Ga3.4O12. Investigations of laser performance were carried out on laser rods from boules free from impurity absorption and with a minimum content of color centers. For Cr3+:GSAG the susceptibility to color centers could be reduced so that even unblocked flashlamp-pumped operation is possible. However, to obtain best results, the competing color center absorptions induced by the UV part of the xenon pumplight were decreased in both hosts by using an UV-blocking dye (<420 nm) in the cooling water.
