Power-dependent enhancement of bit-rate-distance product at 1.55 μm

Abstract

Currently there is considerable interest in high-bit-rate long-distance optical communication systems. Recently 4-Gb/s transmission at 1.55 μm through ~100 km of conventional fibers has been demonstrated using direct modulation1 as well as external modulation.2 A figure of merit for expressing the fiber bandwidth is the bit-rate-distance (BD) product. Results so far have used a linear theory.3,4 We go beyond this theory and demonstrate the effects of moderate laser power on the BD product. We find that the BD product can be increased by a factor of ~ 2 over its low-power value when an optimum amount of average power is launched into the fiber.
