Abstract
In many laser ranging applications, the random pulse distortions caused by time-resolved shot and speckle noise can seriously degrade the receiver accuracy. With mode-locked laser pulses, targets such as the ocean, terrain features, and man-made satellites contribute a considerable range spread to the return pulse. For applications such as remote surface pressure measurement1,2 and millimeter-level satellite laser ranging,3 picosecond timing accuracies are required with pulses which can be many nanoseconds wide. Optimum timing algorithms are of considerable importance in these cases.
