Abstract

Single-mode optical fiber transmission of microwave signals offers considerable advantages over conventional coax microwave links. These include low propagation loss, reduced bulk and weight, and greater immunity from environmental effects. In addition, optical techniques can be uniquely utilized for microwave signal generation, modulation, signal distribution, and beam control in a phased array radar. In this paper, recently developed techniques for optical generation of microwave signals, detection of the microwave modulated optical carrier, downconversion of the demodulated microwave signal, and an optical technique for phase radar beam control are reviewed.
