Abstract
The key parameter which governs the suitability of a laser as a cutting or coagulating surgical tool is the absorption coefficient of tissues at the wavelengths of interest. Wavelengths at which the absorption coefficient is large (10.6 μm) are ideal for incision, while to achieve coagulation small absorption coefficients (1.06 μm) are required.
