Abstract
Tunable lasers most commonly employ intracavity loss control devices such as prisms, gratings, etalons, Fabry Perot interferometers, or some other form of intracavity filter, to effect narrowband tuning. Unfortunately, all of these devices have appreciable insertion loss even at the peak of the passband. This can seriously degrade the performance of low gain lasers. Optical damage to these intracavity elements can be even more problematic.
