Abstract
Coherent laser radar systems based on solid-state laser materials are receiving increased interest for three reasons. First, the high-energy output per unit volume of solid-state lasers is well established. Second, the advent of laser-diode pumping promises increased efficiency and solid-state reliability. Third, the improved spatial resolution possible with shorter wavelengths of solid-state lasers (compared with CO2 lasers) may be necessary in some advanced applications. Components developed for optical communications, such as efficient photodiodes and single-mode fiber, are easily adapted for remote sensing. The special requirement of remote sensing is for high-power single-mode lasers of controllable frequency.
