Abstract

A transversely excited multiatmospheric (TEMA) pressure CO2 laser operating at pressures above 10 atm can provide high-power tunable pulses around the 10-μm region. Continuously tunable pulses are highly attractive in optical pumping of molecules in spectroscopy, molecular lasers, and multiple-photon dissociation. Moreover, the combination of a continuously tunable CO2 laser with a para-H2 rotational Raman laser can cover the 13–18-μm spectral range with tunable coherent radiation, which is indispensable to efficient molecular-laser-isotope separation of heavy metals such as uranium.
